Hippie Chic

Hello, Hello…

It is safe to say you have no idea who I am, but then again, it is also safe to say that most days… Neither do I. At least, fashion and style wise.
My only rule tends to be making sure I only wear clothes that suit my body shape, and colours that compliment my skin and hair tone, I am not a follower of trends (but I am just as aware of them as any fashion magazine addicted girl), but on any given day, I can be dressed like a preppy ivy league student, or an indie rocker. It’s all down to my mood, or maybe it just highlights my lack of a true identity…

Whilst digging through old boxes and photo albums, I came across some pictures of my father from his time in San Francisco in the 70’s, he wore bell bottoms, was totally afro’d up, and was probably smoking something…
Since then, I have been obsessed with the hippie scene that existed in the late 60’s and 70’s, some would rightfully call it a whole cultural movement, a statement against the mainstream (something I think probably needs to happen again), and I have tried my best to incorporate the positive aspects of this movement into my current life.

This really wasn’t that hard actually, I’m already a vegetarian, already an active supporter of various causes, I’m as free spirited as you can get, and I already have a soft spot for extremely low rise bell bottoms (which apparently are now trendy - shoot me!)

The designers, and the money makers at the editorials soon caught on, and no I am not even going to begin to talk about all the flowery prints on the runaway this season… I am talking about, the fact that Style has gone as far to spot a trend in the Spring / Summer 2008 shows, one they decided to name, the ‘Hippie Revival’, here are a few of my favourite shots from their selection:

From Left - Right:
1. Giorgio Armani (Spring / Summer 2008)
2. Balmain (Spring / Summer 2008)

One of my favourite magazines, Marie Claire (I love them for their ability to incorporate fashion, entertainment and real life issues that affect women), recently also featured a fashion spread called ‘Hippie Days’, here are two of my favourites from the shoot:

From Left - Right:
1: Cotton top, £28, Laura Ashley; linen trousers, £160, Jaeger; 18ct gold and bead earrings, £182, Missoma; 18ct gold pendant, £265, Grays Antique Market; gold-plated necklace, £78, Jamie Jewellery; beaded cotton bag, £275, Jamin Puech
2: Cotton shirt, £530, cotton shorts, £195, and beaded cotton belt, £245, all Pucci; leather and rope sandals, £225, D&G; silk-mix scarf, £9, Accessorize; bejewelled 18ct gold chain with pearls, £195, both Grays Antique Market; embroidered leather bag, £2,82

If you’re inspired, more on the Hippie culture can be found here, though I must admit that this identity of mine, is currently undergoing major scrutiny, I suspect that by my next post, I will be someone else…

Love always,
RS.x
