Sabina Karlsson

I generally try to avoid gratuitous ‘I think this person is so cool!’ posts, but sometimes, someone does something to shock me into thinking, talking, and then writing about them, it’s even more annoying when all that person has to do is simply exist, a very good example of someone like this is, Sabina Karlsson.

Why do I like Sabina? Well, on a very basic level, it’s because she has red hair. I like girls with red hair and spent a lot of my childhood wishing by some freak of nature my hair will turn red… But of course it didn’t. Another reason I like Sabina is because she does not look like anyone I have ever seen before, she is probably one of the most unique young models out there at the moment, and at only nineteen years old, she is a beautiful, healthy example of what a model should be, and looks to have a long bright career ahead of her.

Sabina was born and raised in Sweden, (the stunning big hair is a result of the fact that her mother is Gambian) she has been modelling on and off, since she was a child, and was discovered after she participated in Scandinavians Next Top Model. She was then signed to the big Swedish agency, Mikas, and was sent flying all over the world, working, and of course, testing, testing and testing some more. It all paid off and she officially made her debut at the New York Spring Summer 2008 shows, walking for Abaeté, Betsey Johnson, Brian Reyes, Chaiken, Cynthia Steffe, Development by Erica Davies, Heatherette, Lerario Beatriz, Milly by Michelle Smith, Sabyasachi, and Tracy Reese.
Sabina is now featured in the American Eagle and Madewell campaigns, and has recently participated in the Fall / Winter 2008 shows walking for Douglas Hannant, Fatima Lopes, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Martin Grant.

Her first cover came out recently, the May 2008 issue of Japanese fashion magazine, Luire… Something everyone seems to have noticed is the fact that her bottom half is generally almost always covered up on the catwalks, this is because as a US size 6 (UK 10), her stats are slightly bigger than the average model, and when designers choose to use her, they generally pick clothes that do not show off her thighs at all.
In a recent issue of Amber Magazine she was asked how she felt about whole weight issue in the fashion industry?
Sabina responded by saying “It’s sad that the model world requires models to be so skinny, just so they can fit the designer clothes. And, in a way, it’s the designers who are pushing this problem forward—if they keep on making clothes in size zero, models will always need to be a size zero. It’s very important to know these rules that exist in the fashion industry, and to not take them too seriously. Your health is going to be with you your whole life, so don’t let yourself and your health down because of stupid diets and trying to lose weight in unhealthy ways. I eat healthy food and exercise instead; when your energy shines, your beauty will come from within”.
